Nice little hotspot with some minor issues

Reviewed on Friday January 22, 2016 by , Arkansas
I use this hotspot at home and it's turned on 24/7.

I live 300-400 feet away from an AT&T cell phone tower (I get 4/5 cellular bars most of the time) and speeds are pretty good! The max speeds I've gotten are 54mbps download and 30mbps upload on AT&T's 4G LTE network. The speeds are a bit slow sometimes but that could just be because of my area, or maybe the phone tower has a lot of traffic at the moment.

You can connect up to 10 devices to it, by default it's set to 8 of your own devices and 2 guest devices can connect, so I changed it to 10 of my own, and no guests.

The wifi range is set to medium by default, but I changed it to long, which uses more battery, but that doesn't matter to me since my hotspot is always plugged in. The long range isn't exactly "long", it works well up to like 25 feet without walls in the way.. After that you start to get disconnected from it.

Sometimes the internet will slow down a lot but once I restart the hotspot it's fast again. It happens on most cheaper hotspots every now and then from my experience..

It's very hard to find guides or support for this specific hotspot, it seems like most people have a Unite or Unite Pro, the Velocity definitely is not a popular choice.. But that doesn't mean it's bad.

Verdict: It's alright, but you might as well just get an AT&T USB modem and a Cradlepoint/Pepwave type router instead.. Just make sure you get a good USB modem, like an AT&T Beam (beware that the Beam has compatibility issues with some USB modem routers) or an AT&T Momentum. A good Cradlepoint or Pepwave would probably broadcast much further and have a more stable connection than the Velocity, but the Velocity is a nice little device if you need something on the go.
