Quebec Introduces 911 Municipal Tax

December 1, 2009
Starting today, every customer with a phone line in Quebec (landline or wireless, including internet phone service and prepaid card services) that allows users to call (directly or indirectly) an emergency 9-1-1 centre will be charged 40 per month. This tax replaces the former municipal 9-1-1 user fee of 47 cents, which has been in effect since 1995.

For the wireless customer base, this will effect Bell, Telus, Rogers and Solo customers in Quebec. Fido, Koodo and Virgin Mobile have yet to add any related charges to their website.
