Shaw Communications announced on Wednesday that they have reached an agreement to buy WIND Mobile for $1.6 billion. The deal is pending a number of regulatory approvals, including the Competition Bureau and the Ministry of Innovation, Science & Economic Development. Shaw expects the transaction to close in the third quarter of 2016.

WIND Mobile is the fourth-largest mobile operator in Canada with just shy of 1 million subscribers. Bell, TELUS and Rogers have  about 9 million subscribers each.

By adding WIND Mobile Shaw will now be able to put together television, internet, home phone and wireless packages allowing them to compete with Bell, TELUS & Rogers.

We don't think we'll see any changes to wireless costs for Canadian consumers any time soon. Shaw has a lot of work to do to expand the WIND mobile network to provide LTE, better and more coverage across Canada.
