Bell Plans & Add-ons in Quebec

As one of the oldest and most prominent names in Canada’s cell phone industry, Bell has a strong presence and reputation from coast to coast. Providing coverage to over 99% of Canadians, Bell’s 4G network is among the fastest and most reliable in the nation. Bell also offers the latest smartphones, affordable data-sharing options, and a wide variety of add-ons.

Bell Prepaid Plans in Quebec

Bell’s Quebec prepaid plans are available in two varieties—Voice Plans and Voice and Data Plans.

Voice Plans are usually cheaper, giving you anywhere from 10 to 500 minutes of talk. Some plans include nationwide talk time, but cheaper options only let you make local calls. Most Bell prepaid plans include unlimited texting.

Bell, while more expensive than other prepaid carriers in Quebec, only gives you up to 2.5GB of data per month with their prepaid plans. If you like streaming videos or use a lot of data on the run, these plans won’t be ideal for you. Most of their prepaid do, however, include unlimited talk and text.

As expected, Voice and Data Plans become more expensive with additional minutes and data—the more you get, the more you’ll pay.

Bell Basic Phone Plans

Basic Plans are a cheaper and more convenient alternative to Unlimited or Shared plans if you use little to no data but still want unlimited talking and texting. For more information on Basic Plans, check out the widgets below:

Bell Shareable Plans

Shareable plans allow you to add multiple lines to your Bell Mobility account. They also allow you to connect multiple devices and share data between them, from smartphones and smartwatches to tablets and cars. They include anywhere from 5 to 50GB of data, and are perfect if you use multiple devices or want to share data with your family.

It is important to note, however, that once your monthly data limit is exceeded, you’ll have to pay extra for the data you use.

Bell Unlimited Plans in Quebec

Bell’s unlimited plans in Quebec are separated into two types—Bring Your Own (BYO) Phone Plans and Smartphone Plans. Which unlimited plan is best for you depends on how many devices you have and how you’ll be using them.

Unlimited data plans, which include unlimited talk and text, are available at 10GB, 20GB, or 50GB of full-speed LTE data each month. If you use it up, you can keep downloading without data overage fees, but your speeds will be throttled to 512Kbps, which is extremely slow.

Plan costs vary depending on how much data is included and how much you choose to pay for your phone upfront versus monthly. Bell gives you the option of paying whichever way is most convenient for you by breaking their plans down into tiers. The higher the tier, the more expensive the phone is upfront but the less you’ll pay monthly. The lower the tier, the less you pay upfront but the more you owe on your monthly bills.

If you bring your own device (BYOD), you won’t have to pay for the phone since you already own it. The smartphone tab is only available for current mid-tier phones and previous-generation premium phones, which means that you won’t be able to purchase the newest devices from this tier.

From lowest to highest upfront cost, Bell offers the following tiers:

  • Bring Your Own Phone
  • Smartphone
  • Premium
  • Premium Plus
  • Premium Ultra

Bell Postpaid Plans vs. Rogers, TELUS, and Videotron

As Bell is one of the Big Three carriers in Canada, we’ve compared plans and pricing with the other two: Rogers and TELUS. We’ve also compared Bell’s plans to Videotron, a local carrier offering service only to Quebec residents.

Unlimited Plans Compared

Bell, Rogers, and TELUS, all offer unlimited data plans at 10GB, 20GB, and 50GB. None of the Big Three charge for data overages, and all include unlimited nationwide calls and messages. However, a benefit to Bell’s plans is that they are usually just a little bit cheaper than plans offered by Rogers and TELUS.

Videotron plans don’t come with quite as much data, but are cheaper than the other carriers.

Basic Plans Compared

Compared to Bell, TELUS and Rogers both offer cheaper talk and text-only plans beginning at $35/month. Bell offers more coverage than Rogers, but Rogers has the most options out of all three carriers. Videotron’s basic plans are the cheapest out of all four carriers, but you’ll be left with minimal coverage.

Bell Prepaid Plans Vs. Rogers, TELUS, and Videotron

Bell Mobility offers the cheapest prepaid plan, with limited minutes and pay-per-use texting. While this might work for people who use their phones sparingly, it may not be enough for others.

Conversely, Rogers and TELUS include a bit more talk and text with their cheapest packages, while Videotron’s most affordable prepaid plan includes unlimited calling and messaging. Each carrier offers unlimited talk and text options with varying amounts of data, with Rogers offering the least expensive prepaid plan for unlimited talk and text.

Across all prepaid plans, Bell’s pricing is a bit more expensive than Rogers and TELUS, but comparable to Videotron’s. If you need more data but still want to go the prepaid route, Videotron tends to offer the most data with their prepaid plans.

Buying a Phone from Bell in Quebec

Bell offers two methods of payment for standard smartphone plans: Subsidized Phone Pricing and Bell SmartPay.

Subsidized pricing comes with a higher upfront cost but lower monthly fee. SmartPay lets you get any eligible device for $0 down and 0% financing—basically a lower upfront cost but higher monthly rate. SmartPay subscribers make monthly payments toward owning their phones over the course of a two-year period. Rogers’ Edge Financing and TELUS’ Easy Payment are SmartPay’s equivalents from their respective competitors.

Bell Coverage in Quebec

Bell and TELUS offer the best coverage in Quebec, covering 12% of the province, compared with Rogers’ 7.5%. Videotron ‘s coverage trails just behind Rogers, reaching 5.99% of the province. While this may not seem significant, it’s important to remember that Quebec is a very sparsely populated province, so networks only have to reach areas where the population is.

Bell’s coverage is available throughout populated areas. LTE offers 4G speeds, and is the standard for wireless communication. LTE-A is the fastest form of LTE. 4G HSPA+, while not quite up to 4G speeds, is noticeably faster than 3G.

The most extensive coverage is located along the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor. LTE-A is available in and around metropolitan areas. While coverage for LTE-A is not as thorough as it is for LTE or 4G HSPA+, it is accessible to most of the population along the Saint Lawrence from Gatineau to Sept-Iles.
