very good phone

I upgraded to this phone in frustration with my Motorola V66's habit for dropping calls, as well as to get away from the V66's flimsy build.

I am completely impressed with the sound quality and reception of the V500a. And, it feels very made without being heavy. Controls and menus are very well thought out. It is a little larger than others, but then it does not have an antenna poking out either.

Within the first day I knew I made the right choice. Very happy.

The camera is 0.3 megapixel and is limited by that fact. But are you buying a phone or a camera? Even having 1.3 megapixels like a few other phones is of limited use without a bigger better lens in front of it. This camera is fine for quick pictures on the fly where details aren't important.

Why I haven't bought it

So far I've only had one Ericsson - the T616 - and I can tell you that the T616 is the best phone I've ever had, and I've had many and from different manufacturers.

So when the Z500a came out, I eagerly went to the store to get a feel for it, being unimpressed with the aesthetics of the T637.

I'm afraid my first impression was, 'wow, that's big.' Is it necessary for the phone to be twice the size of most non-PDA phones? While disappointed, this would have not kept me from buying it if not for one thing:

Why on earth is the main display so small? It is exactly the same size of the one in the T616 but because the unit itself is so big, and the display is recessed deep inside the unit, the screen looks about half the size.

For someone like me who receives email-to-text messages on a regular basis, this is a big downside.

I was also dismayed to find that there was no Infrared port, which is extremely useful for data transfer.

I only hope the upcoming Z520a will impress me and make up for the shortfalls of the Z500a.
