Freedom Mobile users now have access to Visual Voicemail—if they own an iPhone. The add-on quietly rolled out on the Freedom Mobile website for $4 a month last week and isn’t available as a part of any plans just yet. Visual Voicemail allows the user to do exactly what it sounds like: access voice messages through a visual interface in the iPhone’s voicemail function instead of having to call in and navigate through the keypad.
The benefit is available for the iPhone 5 and higher. Since the function uses data, they’ll also require a Freedom Mobile plan that includes data (which is the large majority of Freedom's plans, anyways).
Sadly, the function isn’t yet available for Android users, but perhaps this is just a testing ground for Freedom to break the ice. Users can set up the feature by taking the following steps:
- Log into their Freedom Mobile account.
- Select "Plans and Add-ons."
- Select "Manage Add-ons."
- Find the Visual Voicemail feature and select "Add to My Plan."
They can then complete the rest of the process by activating it on their phone:
- Go to the Phone app.
- Tap the Voicemail tab.
- Select "Set Up Now" and follow the onscreen prompts to create a PIN and greeting.
The function is still rather primitive and noticeably misses the speech-to-text function, so users will still have to listen to their voicemail instead of reading it in a noisy environment when they're on the go. Data or Wi-Fi Calling will also have to be enabled in order to receive Visual Voicemail messages, as it isn’t available purely through Wi-Fi as of yet.
